When a door stops working the behaviour is usually specific, and specific behaviour maps to a specific part. This guide connects the common ones so you can ask for the right service rather than a general call-out.
Two rules make the rest of it work. First, pull the manual release and move the door by hand: if the problem persists it is the door, and if it disappears it is the opener. Second, if the door will not hold its own weight at mid travel, the counterbalance is the issue whatever else is happening.
None of this replaces a look at the door. It does mean you can describe the fault accurately, which is worth more than it sounds when someone is deciding what to put on the truck.
Most likely cause first, then the one people miss.
Usually the trolley is disconnected from the drive, which is what the red cord does. Re-engage it first. If it still will not move, it is a stripped gear set or a broken spring making the door too heavy to lift.
Opener repairThe close limit set too high, or the photo eyes interrupted. Second most likely is the close force set so sensitive that normal floor contact reads as an obstruction.
SensorsWorn rollers dragging, or a track binding at one point. Cool mornings thicken lubricant and make it worse.
RollersA broken torsion spring. The bang is the tension releasing at once, and the door will be dead on the floor or barely moving. Do not run the opener against it.
Spring repairA snapped lift cable, and the door is a cycle or two from coming off its track. Stop using it.
Cable repairNeither involves touching a spring, a cable or a track.
Close the door, pull the manual release and move it by hand through the full travel. Noise or resistance that persists is the door. Noise that disappears is the opener.
With the opener still released, lift the door to about halfway and let go. It should hold. Dropping or climbing means the counterbalance is out.
Both photo eyes have an indicator. A blinking light means the beam is not completing, which is the most common reason a door refuses to close.
Pull the release back into the trolley, and leave anything under tension alone. Everything past this point is a service call.
